The king of Bhutan, His Majesty JigmeKhesarNamgyalWangchuk announced his marriage to JetsunPema, a 21 year old Bhutanese girl from Thimpu. The announcement came at the inaugural session of the Bhutanese parliament.
The king said “As king, it is now time for me to marry. After much thought I have decided that the wedding shall be later this year. While she is young, she is warm and kind in heart and character.
The king has requested his members of parliament not to plan great celebrations around his wedding. He wishes to be married in a simple ceremony according to the age old traditions of the land.
The king also implied that by getting married he is not starting his own family. “From the very day I received the DharNgay-Nga from the sacred Machhen, the people of the 20 dzongkhags became my family. Such is the duty and privilege of all Kings of Bhutan. It is through this union, that I shall have a Queen, who will support, and work with me, as I serve the people and country.”
According to her biography JetsunPema has been educated at the famed Lawrence School in Sanawar India and did her higher education from the United Kingdom. She is a also said have a keen eye for fine arts, painting and basketball.
NamgayPenjore the Chairman of the National Council was overjoyed to hear this news. He was also heard saying that by this time next year the people of Bhutan would be awaiting to hear news of the Heir to the Golden Throne.
Meanwhile outside the parliament the streets of Thimpu were filled with people discussing the announcement. “This is the best news I have heard since the coronation, the people of Bhutan are really looking forward to this auspicious and joyous occasion” remarked TashiPhebo.
