PemaGatshel is one the youngest districts in Bhutan. The PemaGatshel is one of the six districts that make up eastern Bhutan before its creation as an individual district of Dzhongkhang , Pemagatshel was administered from Mongar, Trashigang and SamdrupJongkhar. Majority of its in habitants are the Tshangalas who make a living via cultivation and rearing animals. The district is renpowed for its local festival and songs, the most memorable being the folk song Ausa which is a farewell song performed during the departure of Family members, relatives or friends. After the construction of the Dzhong in the Eighties a three day annual festival has been held at the Dzhong. The festival is popular with the locals and visitors alike and many people from all walks of life partake in this celebration. The festival is usually scheduled for the month of November.
