The KurjeLakhang is one of the holiest sites in all of Bhutan; the temple is located in the Bumthang valley in Central Bhutan. The history of the KurjeLakahng can be traced back to the 8th century when the legendary Guru Rinpoche on his way to Nepal from Tibet stopped to meditate at a cave resembling a pile of Vajras. He meditated and drove away the demons residing in the valley and left an imprint of himself on the rocks as a reminder to the demons to not return. There are 3 main temples at Kurje the first was constructed in 1652 by the first Penlop of Trongsa , the second by the first king of Bhutan UgyenWangchuck in 1900 and the third in the 1990's by the present Queen Mother. There are 2 Chortens in front of the temple dedicated to the first 3 kings.
